Beeston Castle & Woodland Park

This 'Castle of the Rock' is famous for its spectacular views, which take in no less than eight counties on a clear day. From its lookout point at the top of a mighty crag, you can see from the Pennines all the way to the Welsh mountains.

But that’s not the only reason why Beeston Castle is one of the best-loved visitor attractions in Cheshire. There are beautiful woodlands to explore around the castle, with wildlife trails for the children to follow, and even the chance to find the lost treasure of Richard II.

The Mighty Castle of the Rock

The current fortifications at Beeston were built by Ranulph, the 6th Earl of Chester in 1225. And it’s easy to see why he chose this location – towering above the Cheshire Plain, with views north, south, east and west over 8 counties this really is a mighty castle, similar to the impregnable hill-top strongholds of the Middle East. However, the crag itself has seen over 4,000 years of occupation, dating back to the Bronze Age. Stout shoes and ability to walk up steep slopes are required. No wheelchair access.
