turton-tower

Turton Tower

Turton Tower began as a defensive Pele tower around 1420 and evolved into a lavish residence by the Tudor and early Stuart periods, with timber extensions added by the Orrell family. Purchased by Humphrey Chetham in 1628, it was rented back to the Orrells, who were Cavaliers during the Civil War, creating tension with Chetham’s Roundhead troops. The Greene and Frere families owned the tower in the late 18th and early 19th centuries, with the Horrocks family residing there for a time. The Kay family, arriving in 1835, transformed the tower into a Gothic-style building, adding a mock Tudor extension and rebuilding the Summer House, now privately owned but visible from the tower.
